NYU Course Evaluation Comments: Information Systems Security Engineering and Management
This EEGAD short course on boardroom cybersecurity is built around 5 of the 12 lectures delivered in the spring of 2021 for the NYU Graduate Course CS-GY 6803 "Information Systems Security Engineering and Management" taught by Adjunct Professor Mike Wilkes which received high marks on the course evaluations every semester that it was taught.
Below are some of the actual course evaluation comments from NYU graduate students including Cyber Fellows (returning adult students with an average of 4 years of experience in the industry) pursuing their Master's Degree at the university.
The professor provided well organized, interesting, and thorough lectures. The assignments were not based on the lectures, but also interesting. I believe the education from this course will be extremely beneficial to me in my career.
Professor Wilkes is a subject matter expert and a extremely knowledgeable individual from industry - he was able to provide first-hand experience and insight into the inner workings of the business. This, paired with a rigorous curriculum and entertaining but informative readings, allowed students to be thoroughly engrossed in the material. The group project allowed students to effect some form of change and produce a working document and security analysis, offering a hands-on, practical experience few classes at Tandon provide.
Professor Wilkes should be the standard upon which all instructors at NYU are evaluated on. His vast knowledge and extensive experience in the field clearly shows within his lectures. There have been several classes at NYU where I felt it wasn't worth the tuition, but Professor Wilkes' class is THE master class that I gladly would've paid double for.
He is the master of this subject. The way he teaches is amazing.
It's not easy to make a 'management' course interesting, but you made it. You gave a lot of examples from your knowledge and experience, thanks for that! I would perhaps suggest making us do some quick exercises to better consolidate the concepts introduced in the lectures.
I think the professor has good real world experience which is lacking in academia. He is a charismatic and interesting to listen to with good insight into most facets of cybersecurity. I like that he engages with students in Slack and am actually a little shocked he made the time to respond as much as he did. I liked that he responded to student request to change the textbook to a newer version and selected a text that was free (thank you!). The fact that he is willing to record lectures live on Saturdays is really appreciated (helps fight the isolating feeling of watching videos by myself).
